The image is a GIS/map computation with the factors being wind speed, air density and roughness.
As one can see, Australia's wind potential is in the south, and mostly offshore..
The windmills required will have to be high, but the cities that they need to power , which are home to the primary residential and industrial centres, are far away to the north.
These centres are currently powered by coal and gas stations ,which are much closer, and distributed across the country.
