There are so many mild or asymptomatic cases , but get vaccinated anyway so that the symptoms are not as severe

From the ABC

Data suggests two shots of either the AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccines reduce the risk of hospitalisation and death by more than 90 per cent against the original virus.

And two doses of Pfizer provide around 94 per cent protection against symptoms, while two doses of AstraZeneca provide 82.4 per cent protection.

Both vaccines also provide more than 90 per cent protection against hospitalisation for the highly transmissible Delta variant after two doses.

But they are less effective against symptomatic disease for this strain.

While one dose of either vaccine only provides around 33 per cent protection against symptoms from Delta, two doses provide between 88 per cent (Pfizer) and 60 per cent (AstraZeneca) protection against symptoms.

Then, according to infectious disease expert Professor Philip Clignon, quoted by the RACGP magazine in Apr 2020:
"NZ is aiming for elimination and Victoria is trying to emulate that. But I think that’s very unlikely....there are so many mild or asymptomatic cases that we can’t find them all. I don’t think we’re going to stop it."

And more recently from Queensland's Chief Medical Officer Dr Jeannette Young:

The following has been  tweeted by Australian journalist Michael Smith. It must force a reevaluation of Australia's COVID response , which is probably the most expensive in the world .

It also involves a policy of shutting in and shutting out Australian citizens from leaving or entering Australia. The rationale has always been the need to prevent COVID deaths.

Now however, in the words of one of the most senior chief medical officers in the country, the probability of death from COVID  is extremely low, for it must be lower than the probability of a healthy person dying of  a blood clot caused by the Astra Zeneca vaccine, which the experts relying on the science tell us, is negligible.

Australia’s chief health officers are preparing to stage a revolt against Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s push for young people to front up for the AstraZeneca jab.

Queensland’s Dr Jeannette Young, Australia’s longest serving chief health officer, has taken direct aim at Mr Morrison’s push for young people to ask their GPs about receiving the AstraZeneca jab, associated with a rare clotting disorder.

“I do not want under-40s to get AstraZeneca,” she said. “We are not in a position that I need to ask young, fit, healthy people to put their health on the line by getting a vaccine that could potentially significantly harm them.

“I don‘t want an 18-year-old in Queensland dying from a clotting illness who, if they got Covid probably wouldn’t die.

“We‘ve had very few deaths due to Covid-19 in Australia in people under the age of 50, and wouldn’t it be terrible that our first 18-year-old in Queensland to who dies related to this pandemic died because of the vaccine?”
