So, more evidence of how seriously the Australian Government takes its engagement with ASEAN.
The Australia-ASEAN Council , (which is part of the Department Of Foreign Affairs And Trade) was launched on 8 September 2015 to generate opportunities for Australian business, education, science, innovation and the arts to work with partners in Southeast Asia.
The council's mission is to increase knowledge and promote Australia's interests in Southeast Asia by initiating and supporting activities to enhance understanding and links between people and institutions in Australia and 10 countries: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The council supports various initiatives during the year, through its annual grants round and flagship programs.
On 22 December 2020 The Minister for Foreign Affairs Marise Payne announced that Ms Poh Ling Yeow and Professor Nicholas Farrelly will join the Board the Australia-ASEAN Council . Ms Yeow is a cook, artist, actress, author and television presenter of Malaysian heritage based in South Australia.
Professor Farrelly is Head of Social Sciences at the University of Tasmania.
